Grassroots Reconciliation Group, a non-profit that works with former child soldiers in Uganda, seeks a Marketing Intern for Fall 2011

The Grassroots Reconciliation Group (GRG) seeks an intern for Fall 2011 to assist in further developing its marketing, social media, and fundraising strategies while organizing fundraising events.


GRG provides former child soldiers in northern Uganda with opportunities for a new life through reconciliation and livelihood projects that they and their communities design themselves.  Former child combatants join with community members to work on GRG projects, including communal farming, brick-making, and micro-finance. Participants build strong relationships and work hand-in-hand on projects that they design themselves. They then use the proceeds from the projects to start new businesses, help themselves through school, and begin building a life.  GRG’s small, dedicated staff works with over 400 project participants in 17 projects and we are working towards a replacement outreach.


The Marketing Intern will coordinate with GRG’s Executive Director, a Board Member, and a Fundraising Advisor in weekly meetings while completing pre-scheduled tasks on his/her own before weekly deadlines.  You should be well organized and punctual.  We will expect you to be able to schedule short blog posts and tweets at key times 2-3 days a week.


  • We are currently blogging using a WordPress platform and post twitter and facebook pages, daily.  Have you done this before in a relevant field?
  • Check out and, think we need to make any changes? Do you have the skills to make those changes yourself?
  • If you think you can help us increase donations through Facebook, Twitter, blog, and multi-media photos and videos, that’s awesome, tell us how!
  • Do you have some fundraising event ideas that will pull in a large number of people?
  • Ever written a press release? Any examples of it having been picked up by the media?


Requirements: Background in internet marketing, social media campaigns and experience with fundraising events. GRG is seeking someone who will consistently come to us with innovative ideas while remaining dedicated. Interest in international development, Africa, or conflict resolution is a plus.  While this an unpaid internship, we will provide you with excellent hands-on experience in the ever increasingly important industries of non-profit and Internet marketing. You can probably expect an impressive recommendation or connection out of us, if you do a good job. This is an ideal opportunity for a student or someone trying to move into the non-profit fundraising and marketing sectors.


Location: Washington, DC area


Time commitment: Part-time, approximately 10-15 hours per week.
