Meet Irene

Posted in News

Irene spent a year in the bush with the rebel Lord’s Resistance Army, witnessing people being tortured and killed.  She was unable to tell us much of her story because of the emotional trauma. Treated like a slave, she was often starved and forced to carry heavy loads and frequently collapsed from the strain.

Miraculously, she was released when the rebels were confronted by the Ugandan army around a hill known as Kilak in Atiak Sub-County. Now, her community members frequently badger and verbally abuse her because of the stigma surrounding being a ‘returnee,’ i.e. a former child soldier.  Irene hopes that GRG community counseling projects will help her move on from the trauma of her past and find acceptance in her new community.

Enable Irene and many other former child soldiers to rehabilitate by purchasing a ticket to Monument Fest Aug 11th.
